Kerala is a year-round destination, but the months you choose change the trip: cool mornings in the hills, empty backwaters, or the green, rain-washed look people travel for. A little planning up front saves a lot of disappointment.
October to March: the classic season
Days are warm and mostly dry, which makes it the easiest time for houseboats, tea-estate walks in Munnar and beach days in Kovalam. It is also the busiest stretch, especially around Christmas and New Year, so stays and houseboats are worth enquiring about early.
April to May: hot, quiet and good value for the hills
The coast is hot and humid, but hill stations such as Munnar and Thekkady stay pleasant. If you are travelling with children on school holidays, a hills-first itinerary works well in these months.
June to September: the monsoon
Heavy rain turns the state deep green, waterfalls run full and the pace slows. It is also the traditional season for Ayurvedic treatments. Expect showers rather than all-day rain, and build slack into travel days.
How many days does it need?
- 4 nights: one hill station plus one night on a houseboat.
- 6 to 7 nights: add a beach stay and a wildlife stop.
- Longer: slow down, and add Kochi's old quarter and a cooking class.
